Family Therapy

Pain is passed down from generation to generation until someone is able to feel it. -Katherine Rheem Ed.D LMFT

In some cases the added stress of the Covid-19 pandemic, political divisions, and financial worries have raised differences and disagreements among families members to crisis levels. For other families the conflict comes from past hurts, unhealed fights, or unspoken tensions. Others describe that as soon as they are around their family members they regress back to feelings and behaviors from when they were younger - whether they mean to or not. (This is not uncommon, family patterns are a powerful thing.) We work with families of all ages, including adult children, siblings, parents, and in-laws to restore peace, increase understanding, and help everyone enjoy being together again.

Who participates in family therapy? How does it work?

It depends. Initially we have a consultation with the family members who are interested in therapy either together or separately. As we learn more about your specific concerns, We’re assessing if we are the right fit to help you and how best to proceed. Generally, we meet with family members individually at first and then we meet together as the work proceeds.

What kinds of things do you help families with?

We have helped families in big and small ways including learning how to express and manage emotions, how to set and hold healthy boundaries, how to discuss areas of disagreement, how to meet emotional needs, how to become a united parenting front, and how they are going to celebrate the holidays together. We have also helped families repair after fights, conflicts, and cut-offs. We have guided families in identifying generational trauma and changing how they respond moving forward. A family therapist can be very helpful in slowing down conversations everyone can hear each other and identify our needs so that we can respond with intention rather than reacting in the heat of the moment. We help people see the humanity in their family members again.

We offer free, 20 minute, online consultations.
